IMPORTANCE OF IQ IN STUDENTS

Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is a measure of a student’s reasoning ability. Due to weakness in one specific area of intelligence, some students struggle in school to learn properly and quickly. Special education programs are exclusively organized for these students to perform better, where they get extra help in the areas where they’re struggling. To figure out which students would benefit from such extra help, IQ tests come as a great help for teachers.

FACTORS AFFECTING IQ SCORES ARE:

  • Access to education
  • Rates of infectious disease
  • Nutrition
  • Cultural norms

ARE IQ TESTS A GOOD MEASURE OF INTELLIGENCE?

To identify students with mental difficulties, schools have historically used IQ scores in the placement of students on educational programs. However, IQ scores and tests are no longer the only measures of a person’s cognitive ability or potential. Environmental and cultural factors may affect a person’s cognitive ability and play a role in how well a person performs on a test. Due to that, nowadays IQ scores are somewhat controversial since these IQ tests remain a part of helping identify a person’s intelligence.

Psychologists set the average score of the norming scale to IQ 100, when they first developed the current IQ test. Based on standard deviations above or below 100 points students have scored, the IQ is measured and the average score should fall right around 100.

The IQ score helps to understand how well a student can use information and logic to answer questions or make predictions. The tests not only assess and measure short- and long-term memory but also measure how well and quickly a student can solve puzzles and recall information they’ve heard. These tests help predict which student would make good leaders, or be better at certain specific skills. But the IQ test does not show a person’s full range of intellect since it does not account for their creativity or social intelligence. And it can also vary greatly by country and region.

Some of the most popular tests which licensed psychologists use today for measuring intelligence include,

  • Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale
  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children
  • Differential Ability Scales
  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Adults
  • Peabody Individual Achievement Test

POWERFUL TECHNIQUES TO INCREASE A STUDENT’S IQ

Studies show that, people with high IQ tend to be successful. There’s no age limit to improving a person’s IQ but students’ formative years are the best time for them to recognize patterns and act accordingly. Want to learn some very simple ways to become smarter in life?

Check out these powerful techniques for increasing your IQ.

  • Get active in sports
  • Start playing brain games
  • Practice deep breathing daily
  • Engage in Mathematical Calculations
  • Start learning any musical instrument

Get active in sports: Playing a sport can actually increase your intelligence and IQ level. Scientific studies prove that, sports can improve concentration, focus, memory and other aspects of intelligence. Especially, games like tennis and soccer provide a physical activity which has several useful benefits for the brain.

Start playing brain games: Whether it’s fiddling with a Rubik’s cube or filling out Sudoku, brain games can make students happy and provide enjoyment at the same time that they sharpen their mental abilities. They challenge students to think differently, imagine, and solve ever-changing problems.

Practice deep breathing daily :

Studies say that deep breathing strengthens the brain and boosts attention span. There are some steps for doing mindfulness breathing which can enhance a student’s IQ.

First, sit in a comfortable cross-legged position and close eyes. Focus completely on the breath — just observe its natural rhythm without making an effort to adjust it. Focus on the rise and fall of the chest, the sensation in nostrils, and the sound the breath makes in the throat. Inhale through the nose for 3 seconds and hold the breath for 2 seconds. Then exhale through the mouth for 4 seconds and then return to the normal breathing and continue to observe.

Engage in Mathematical Calculations: Intelligence comes from solving problems, so doing mental calculations will improve a student’s intelligence. If a student can grasp the concept of logarithms, he or she has all the necessary cognitive equipment.

Start learning any musical instrument: It is proven by science that musical training can change brain structure and function for the better. For those who start studying instruments at a young age, it can also improve long-term memory and lead to better brain development.
